quidam paterfamilias
habuit XII oves.

contigit quod: "it happened that"

paterfamilias: masculine nominative singular (pater - familias, with familias being an archaic form of the feminine genitive singular)

  how many sheep does the landlord own?
Voluit peregrinari
et commendavit oves suas
Ysemgrino, id est lupo,
compatri suo.

peregrinari: s.v. peregrinor (deponent verb)

compatri: s.v. compater (this is where we get words like the Spanish compadre)

why does he entrust the sheep to the wolf?
Et compater iuravit
quod bene conservaret eas.
Profectus est statim.

quod...conservaret: medieval equivalent of purpose clause with ut

profectus est statim (paterfamilias): s.v. proficiscor

  what did the wolf promise to do?
Ysemgrinus interim cogitavit de ovibus
et uno die comedit de una,
altera die de alia,
ita quod vix tres invenit paterfamilias,
quando reversus est.

vix: adverb

paterfamilias: masculine nominative singular

how many sheep were left when the man got home?
Querebat a compatre
quid factum fuerit de aliis ovibus.

querebat = quaerebat

  what did the man ask the wolf?
Respondit Ysemgrinus
quod mors ex temperalitate
venit super eas.
ex temperalitate: "out of time, untimely, unexpected"
  what did the wolf say?
Et dixit paterfamilias:
Da mihi pelles;
et inventa sunt vestigia dencium lupi.
dencium = dentium (s.v. dens)
  how did the man discover what had happened?
Et ait paterfamilias:
Reus es mortis;
et fecit lupum suspendi.
suspendi: present passive infinitive
  what happened to the wolf in the end?
