Mount Sinai, located in the southern part of the Sinai Desert, is sacred to the Jewish, Christian and Muslim traditions. It is also known as Mount Moses or, in Arabic, the Jebel Musa. It is where Moses is supposed to have received the tablets of the 10 Commandments, and it is also the place where Mohammed's horse, Buraq, rose up to heaven. A Christian chapel (see below) was built on the site in the 4th century and then rebuilt by the Emperor Justinian in the 6th century (when St. Catherine's Monastery was also constructed). There is considerable debate about the identification of this mountain in Egypt with the Biblical Mount Sinai; Bob Cornuke and others have argued instead for the identification of Sinai with a mountain in Saudi Arabia; this contention is hotly debated. |
