St. Catherine's Monastery was built in the middle 6th century by Emperor Justinian on the site where Moses was supposed to have been summoned to the Burning Bush. The monastery is built on Mount Sinai (4854 feet); there are nearly 4000 ancient steps carved into the mountain for use by pilgrims. There is now a debate about whether or not to construct a cable-car to facilitate pilgrimage to the top of the mountain. You can learn more about this monastery online at the Catholic Encyclopedia. |
