Elegaic Couplets

The "elegaic couplet" is one of the most popular Latin verse forms. If you are not familiar with the basic rules of Latin meter, which are based on vowel quantity, you can read this online introduction to Latin meter. Here is a picture of the elegaic couplet's pattern:

There are many famous classical Latin poets who used the elegaic couplet meter, most notably Ovid (in his Fasti, the Amores, among others) and the elegaic love poets, Propertius and Tibullus.

Here are the poems by Walter broken up into metrical feet. There is a / between each foot, and a || for the pentameter break. To help you feel the shift from foot to foot, they are printed in alternating colors. Individual words are underlined, so you can distinguish between word breaks and the pattern of the feet.
