"The female of like appearance," whom Saranyu, wife of Vivaswat, substituted for herself when she fled. Manu was the offspring of Savarna. This is the version given in the Nirukta.

In the Vishnu Purana, Savarna is daughter of the ocean, wife of Prachinabarhis, and mother of the ten Prachetasas.
