Audio Readings

Lots of people write and ask me how to "correctly" read Latin out loud. That always makes me laugh. I don't have a clue how to pronounce it "correctly"! Last time I checked Latin was a dead language, so it should be happy that anybody is pronouncing it in any way whatsoever. When somebody is giving you mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, you don't bother about their accent.

The most important thing is just that: READ OUT LOUD. Don't worry about being "correct" (whatever that means).

Reading out loud will help you slow down, think about the Latin, and really learn the language.

Remember: Rome was full of foreigners! So just pretend you are a foreigner with a really really bad accent... and think of all the nice people you know with terrible accents when they speak English. Why, just think of the governor of California...! And don't worry about your accent!

And let's be clear: these audio recordings are not provided for you to imitate! Not at all! My Latin pronunciation is a weird mix of American and Italian and Polish accents. The reason I do these recordings is not to demonstrate anything that is "correct," but just to give you something to listen to in Latin. Learning to listen is just as important as reading out loud! And after you have listened to these recordings, I hope you will start reading out loud on your own: reading as loud as you can, as much as you can.

You will find small "play" icons wherever the new audio snippet starts in the segmented text. If you would like to download them in a zipped text, you can do that using the links below.
