Genesis. Scala Iacob.

Brief Comments on the Latin:

[Note: You will find other helpful information by looking at the segmented text, which shows clearly how the sentences and clauses are organized. You can also choose to have the verbs and/or bold speech highlighted, which often makes the Latin easier to understand.]

28:10 The participle-verb combination, egressus pergebat, can be translated as verb-verb: "he left... and went..."

28:13 The word Dominum is in the accusative because it is the direct object of vidit from the previous verse. The Hebrew names Abraham and Isaac do not decline; here they are both in the genitive (Deus Abraham, "God of Abraham," and Deus Isaac, "God of Isaac"). Note the parallel construction: tibi dabo et semini tuo (dabo).

28:14 Note that tribus is in the nominative plural (subject of benedicentur).

28:17. The verb inquit is being used postpositively here to indicate direct speech.

28:21 The verb reversus fuero is introduced by the si in the previous verse.
