Aesop's Fables: Sir Roger L'Estrange (1692)
22. A WOLF AND A SOW (Perry 547)
A Wolf came to a Sow, that was just lying down, and very kindly offer’d
to take care of her Litter. The Sow as civilly thank’d her for her Love,
and desir’d she wou’d be pleas’d to stand off a little, and do her the
good Office at a distance.
THE MORAL There are no Snares so dangerous as those that are laid for
us under the Name of good Offices.
L'Estrange originally published his version of the fables in 1692. There is a
very nice illustrated edition in the Children's Classics series by Knopf: Sir
Roger L'Estrange. Aesop
- Fables which is available at amazon.com.
