Here are some questions to get you started:
- Did you study Greek mythology in school? Why do you think Greek mythology
continues to be so popular?
- Have you ever been to Greece and traveled there?
- Have you ever eaten Greek food? Did you like it?
- Do you speak any modern Greek? Read ancient Greek?
- Did you read Aesop's fables when you were little? What fables do you remember?
Was there a fable that you remember best?
- Have you read Homer's Odyssey for a class? What are the episodes from the
story that you remember most?
- What comes to mind when you think of the word "odyssey"? What
is an odyssey?
- *** What comes to mind when you think
of a "fable"? What kind of story is a fable? What about the word
"myth": what does the word "myth" mean to you? ***
- The Aesop's fables often have animals as their main characters: is there
a particular type of animal that you identify with? do you have pets? do you
like stories about animals in general?
- One of the main characters in the Odyssey episode is a witch: what comes
to mind when you think about witches? What are the kinds of powers that witches
are supposed to have? How are witches supposed to behave? What are some of
the famous witches from the folklore tradition that you can think of?
- If you already know that you are going to choose the Odyssey unit, what
are you reason for choosing that one? What interests you about the story of
Odysseus? Do you want to read these selections from the Odyssey because you
have read the story before and like it - or because it is something you have
never really been exposed to?
- If you already know that you are going to choose the Aesop unit, what are
your reasons for choosing that one? Is it because you remember lots of Aesop's
fables from when you were little? Or because you are not exactly sure just
what Aesop's fables are all about?
- Take a look at some of the images for this week's units (click on the image
to see a larger view and learn more): do you recognize some of these images?
do any of the images really capture your imagination and make you curious?
